chip elitist kids please remember that there's nothing wrong in wanting people to listen to your music more than wanting to address a technicallity

2020-08-15 01:51:17@pedipanol Outside of the chiptune community, people like "8-bit" music and hate "chiptune." 8-bit is the music people remember from old games. "Chiptune" is an insular group of elitist internet weirdos posting pretentious, unlistenable show-off garbage that sounds nothing like 8-bit music.
2020-08-15 02:04:17@pedipanol This reputation is not entirely accurate, but it is also not entirely unearned. But yeah, even though I cringe at calling covers "remixes," and I find the term "8-bit" to be cringey in general, it's what people search for, so i always put "8-bit" and "remix" in the tags.
2020-08-15 02:12:00@WldMts out of curiosity, where do you draw the line between a cover and a remix?
2020-08-15 02:23:41@pedipanol Before I was a musician, I overused the term "remix." It was the only way I knew how to say that there was a shared idea between two songs. If a motif runs through two songs, I'd call the latter a remix. Now I over-correct by avoiding the term altogether.
2020-08-15 02:30:37@pedipanol As I got into music I noticed musicians largely tend to avoid the term, in favor of "cover" or "arrangement" or other terms. It's just a weird shibboleth. It's not even necessarily that "remix" is WRONG, per se--it's just that in-groups tend to develop distinct terminology.
2020-08-15 02:33:56@pedipanol For me it's not any kind of elitism, it's just me looking back at my own former misuse of the term, cringing, and being extra careful about how I use it now--to the point where I almost never say it when "cover" or "arrangement" would do.
2020-08-15 02:34:59@WldMts @pedipanol I think that’s an interesting way of looking at it, and I can’t really disagree with it. To me, a remix always has this association with electronic music production. For that reason I myself have no problem using either arrangement or remix—depending on what it is. After all-
2020-08-15 02:39:10@WldMts @pedipanol It feels a bit “wrong” for me to call something an arrangement if I didn’t actually arrange any instruments in any specific way (not necessarily in the sheet music kind of way either), so if it’s mostly synth and drum loops it justifies being called a remix. It gets complicated-
2020-08-15 02:40:18@WldMts @pedipanol once you dive into the realm of chiptune and tracker music because it can’t be anything BUT electronic but at the same time it doesn’t involve any ‘production’ in the same way it does for electronic (dance) music. I think in cases like these-
2020-08-15 02:43:11@WldMts @pedipanol ‘cover’ works really well because it doesn’t really carry a connotation, in its purest sense it simply describes a different take on a song. You can have jazz covers, orchestral covers or chiptune covers, but you can’t really have orchestral remixes or EDM arrangements I feel.
