My childhood set the tone for the rest of my life by starting off uneventful. My brother Tonitrus was my hero in those days and taught me pretty much everything I know about exploring the unarchived web and discovering lost media. That was until I got careless and the The Council came knocking at our door. Tonitrus took the full blame for all our shared archives and protected me. He didn't last long in the conformity centers, eventually being discharged after the brain surgeries he earned from fighting back "fixed" him. Tonitrus stumbled back through the doors of my house and stayed there until his life ended, but the last time I saw my brother was when he left with the xyz, a smile on his face and his final parting words to me "this is fine, kiddo. I'll be back in no time." My brother never really returned home. The lesson was learned. I wore a mask through my teenage years, keeping all those around me at arms length while escaping into my own fantasy worlds. I used to dream that someone else, anyone else would appear and see the real me hidden inside and not be repulsed by it. Instead I simply enshrouded myself deeper and deeper behind a stoic visage, barely speaking throughout my education. A neurological condition made my physical pain almost as unbearable as the psychological. Doctors decided they had a cure by cutting out the weak parts as they broke down one by one. You'd think excising the weak flesh would make me stronger but rather I no longer even recognized my own hands through the lifeless implants I now relied on to see the world. By the time I graduated I'd buried the real me so deep down that it only came out in the stories I wrote. Time's arrow marches ever forward however. I had just as few aspirations as an adult as I did as a teenager. I would work wherever paid decently and would hire a dropout with no social skills. Kitchen assistant, sous chef, bar back, mixologist. Whenever others got too close or began to rely on me I would put in my resignation letter and move to the next thing. All the while I spent less and less time indulging in my fantasies and simply existed, surviving day by day but with less of myself remaining hidden behind the mask. The mask was becoming my reality and desire for someone else to discover the real me turned instead to fear. There was so little left within my coccoon. The living parts had rotted while a husk survived in it's place. Tomorrow, then tomorrow and tomorrow again I told myself. Tomorrow I would begin writing again or find someone to connect with or atleast feel something for anything. The funny thing about tomorrow is that it never comes if you're constantly avoiding the present. I was the joke at this point. More emotionally stunted than Tonitrus with all his surgeries. #Archivestment #Archivist404

In my mid-twenties I was forced to pass an education certification to continue receiving basic income. Then by some sick joke I was actually hired to guide future developing minds. I dreaded the idea at first, scared that children with all their innocence and simplicity would see right through me and let their parents know that The Council should take me away. I still remember my first day on the job doing my best to blend into the background as children avoided the stranger with the scary eyes and metal limbs. A child who had been sitting by themselves approached me cautiously, book in hand and asked if I could read it to them. Three pages in the child told me I was doing it wrong. "You have to do the voices and feelings!" They told me. I began reading the story the way Tonitrus once read to me and when the book ended I was shocked to find a whole crowd had abandoned their games, staring at the pictures in the book from over my shoulder and fighting over which story I should read next. Over my years as a teacher and then librarian, reading to children became one of my favourite pastimes. I was escaping into other worlds again and even began ignoring the words on the pages, simply saying whatever came into my mind and scribbling terrible drawings as I did which became both a source of mockery and enjoyment. Once again my life proved to be both tragedy and comedy. It wasn't enough that fantasy, sci-fi and romance had been banned already but now all fiction was being seized and replaced with straight forward life lessons directly from the xyz without so much a hint of allegory. Those times weighed heavily on me. It had only been a short while since I actually felt something for once and as soon as I had it was accompanied by the fear of losing it. It wasn't the punishment for my transgressions that I feared, but simply what I would become if I lost my one source of happiness in life. Life needs nurturing to flourish. I realized I had been dying for decades in that regard and only now had begun to live in my own way. I continued to tell my own stories for a while, fully expecting to be brought in as an undesirable at any moment and yet when I finally was summoned by them it was for a reason I couldn't have predicted. My neuropathy had continued to worsen but I'd done my best to fight through it. It was embarassing to show my pain in front of others, sure. Much worse was the worry I saw on the children's faces when I found myself unable to even breathe during a particularly bad spasm. It was always a blessing to see their looks of relief and joy when I'd return after a hospital break... but then The Council finally knocked on my door as they had all those years ago. My spasms, my large number of absences, the quiet gasps I would sometimes make in public while trying to hold back a scream of pain. These were the reasons I was given to report to the conformity centers. It wasn't only one but several people that had reported me for making them uncomfortable with my very existence. As such I was locked in a small pale white room, closed off from everything outside that I might die in a way that didn't disturb others' normal lives. I didn't fight it of course. In my childhood I'd seen how much worse it was for those with the courage to resist. Instead I simply returned to my past self, surviving each day and hoping the end would come sooner rather than later. They were kind enough to give me a small cylindrical device I had to keep on me at all times. A net jack they called it. Place it to my throa2 and pull the trigger and the respirator which acted in place of my vagus nerve would shut down. I turned it over in my hand for hours, feeling the weight of the red and black material. That was when a nurse entered and supplied me with another gift. Something to distract myself from the pain. A gateway to a virtual world they only offered to hospice patients. As I put them on I took my first steps as Legatus. #Archivestment #Archivist404
